A natural, ancient and tourist site known for its extraordinary landscapes and hot springs. It is located in the province of Denizli, southwestern Turkey. The hot waters that flow from mountain sources contain minerals that, once carbon dioxide released, form calcium carbonate on the sides of rocks, which hardens after evaporation of water. Hence its white appearance, like cotton that gives Pamukkale its name, i.e. "cotton castle".
The ancient city of Hierapolis was founded by King Eumenes of Pergamum. After its annexation to the Roman Empire, it became a major resort center. The city consists of temples, churches, ancient pools, thermal baths, necropolis, and agora. Thanks to all these features, it was included into the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
